SPMT 430 - Week 6 Blog - Grappling Industries Competition weekend .
So after a tough training camp for my Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) team, Centreville BJJ, it was competition time for my team to those who decided to compete. Some had competed before and wanted to enjoy it, while for some others this would be their first time competing, and it was a great learning experience for them. During our training preparations, we would have them run sprints back and forth at the gym after a training session, volunteer to stay after for extra sparring sessions, and meet at the local high school track for extra cardio work. Run hills, run on the bleachers, and race one another to build up their cardio. Now it was game time for a local competition called Grappling Industries, a local tournament competition for locals who are getting into the sport/martial art of Jiu-Jitsu and want to test themselves. As a coach, I would make sure my team would be ready with their weight, ensure their knowledge of the ruleset, and ask what their game plan is when they go out there to compete. As well as be in their corner to help coach them during their time on the competition mat. This time cornering my team, and taking this class, I tried my best to control my excitement and competitiveness, by watching my team compete by yelling less and giving out controlled and thoughtful tips on what to do when they competed.
Such as instead of yelling out loud "STAY HEAVY!!" when my teammate would get in a top position, I would calmly say, "Stay heavy, keep your hips low, and give your opponent your pressure." Although at these tournaments, the crowd can be loud with everyone in attendance, so I would raise my voice a little, but still give out tips in a controlled manner. At the end of the day, I am proud of my team and everything that they have accomplished, and taking this class has helped me a little in how to coach and successfully communicate with my team. As well as how to speak to my team as a coach during competition.
